Recurring Investments — CommBank App Everyday Investing

Company: CommBank

Designed a cross-platform recurring investment feature to help new investors form a regular investing habit — tackling churn and positioning CommBank to compete in Australia's micro-investing market.

Recurring Investments — CommBank App Everyday Investing

Context

CommBank's Everyday Investing ecosystem — spanning CommSec Pocket, Domestic equities, and the Lumen platform — lacked a recurring investment capability that had become standard across Australian micro-investing apps like Raiz, Stake, Sharesies, Vanguard, and Pearler. Shipping this feature was both a hygiene requirement to stay competitive and a strategic lever to grow accounts and Funds Under Management (FUM).

Deliverables

  • Native iOS and Android recurring investment flows within the CommBank app
  • Entry points within the Buy flow and Manage sections
  • UI components aligned with CBA's design system and accessibility standards
  • Figma prototypes for usability testing and design specs for development handover

Problem space

User research revealed high drop-off driven by the friction of manually initiating every deposit. Without recurring investments, customers struggled to build consistent investing habits — limiting long-term outcomes and CBA's ability to grow FUM. The design challenge was delivering one cohesive, product-agnostic experience across three fragmented platforms while meeting Design and Distribution Obligation (DDO) compliance requirements.

My role & design process

I led UI design on this project, working with a UX designer teammate and a cross-functional team across product, research, and delivery.

The process moved through several phases:

  • Discovery workshops with stakeholders — aligning on the core opportunity: "How might we help new investors form a regular investing habit?"
  • Current state audit and competitor analysis — reviewing existing flows and extracting patterns from Stake, Vanguard, Raiz, Pearler, Betashares, and Sharesies
  • Usability testing — preparing Figma prototypes, observing sessions alongside the team, then iterating UX and UI based on shared findings
  • Internal design forums — presenting the project myself in CBA's broader design critique sessions to gather feedback from colleagues and gain validation from design leads
  • UI design execution — translating flows into production-ready designs across all three platforms with reusable, product-agnostic patterns

Outcomes & results

The uplift contributed to increased Everyday Investing account growth in the CommBank app, delivering a consistent customer experience across Pocket and Domestic through the adoption of CommBank's new design system.

Key design outcomes:

  • Consistent experience across three distinct platforms unified under CommBank's new design system
  • Reduced setup friction through simplified inputs and modern frequency selection — replacing outdated click-wheel patterns identified in the current state audit
  • Established a reusable, product-agnostic pattern for recurring financial actions that can scale to future Everyday Investing products

Confidentiality note

Due to CBA confidentiality guidelines, I'm unable to share detailed mockups or process artefacts from this project. Selected discovery artefacts are shown here with sensitive information removed.
